At present, the City of Monticello is involved in a water meter replacement program. Old water meters are being replaced throughout the City with new electronic meters with will allow the City to more efficiently read your water meters and provide correct bills in a timely manner. As a result, when you water meter is changed you may notice a slight increase or perhaps a dramatic increase in usage.

Water meters are like any other mechanical device; they break down over a period of time. When water meters age, they become less accurate. Therefore, an older meter will give you a certain amount of water for free.

The replacement of these older water meters with new meters does not cause your usage to go up, it merely accounts for the actual amount of water that you use. For example, if your old water meter was only 80% accurate, you received 20% of your water for free. When your meter is changed you will be charged for 100% of the water that you use.

The City of Monticello has chosen to use the Sensus Technologies Touchread Meter System. These meters are guaranteed to be accurate for fifteen years. You can rest assured that you will not be over charged for your water usage.

Water Dept. Questions

How can I avoid a high water bill?

It is very simple. First check to make certain that you don't have leaks. Even a leaky toilet can cause thousands of gallons of usage in a month! Second, be aware of how often you use water. It is surprising how much water can be used in taking those long showers and by washing a small amount of clothes. If you would like information regarding water conservation and how to check for leaks, please contact the Water/Wastewater Business Office.
