Overview

Welcome to the Monticello Fire Department Paramedic Course, where we prepare you to become a highly skilled and compassionate emergency medical professional. This comprehensive program is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel in dynamic and critical healthcare environments.

As Indiana’s only fire department-based paramedic training program, Monticello Fire will administer exceptional, real-world instruction provided by currently practicing paramedics. Monticello Fire is not only committed to the success of our students in the classroom, but also strives to develop leaders in prehospital emergency medicine after licensure. Because of our fire-based program, students will have access to instructors or licensed paramedics 7 days a week for any assistance they may need.

Students will learn all aspects of prehospital emergency medicine including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, recognition and treatment of medical and traumatic emergencies, special population (OB, pediatric, geriatric etc.) emergencies, endotracheal tube placement, surgical cricothyrotomy, intravenous and intraosseous access, cardiac rhythm and 12 lead ECG interpretation and treatment, and EMS operations. Students will first learn skills in a classroom setting, then practice in a lab setting, and once proficient, skills will be utilized in clinical setting under supervision.

This one-year course will begin January, 2025. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Monticello Fire Department from 0900-1600 as well as at least two weekend classes.

Accreditation

The Monticello Fire Department Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self-Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the National Registry's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
